What is the difference between offset printing and flexo printing?

Offset printing has been around since the 1800s. When you think of that big newspaper press, that is the type of machinery used with Offset Printing. The term ‘offset’ actually refers to the fact the image plate only interacts with the printed page through an intermediary called a ‘blanket’. Mechanically this would be a strip of rubber that picks up the ink from the plate and transfers it around a cylinder, rolling the ink onto the paper.

Flexo printing, or flexographic printing, takes out this intermediary completely. It does this by having the image that would typically be on an offset printer’s plate and etching directly onto a cylinder. These cylinders can be used multiple times before wearing out. The revolutionary aspect of flexography is the types of shapes that can be printed on. By turning the plate into a rotary printing surface the mediums that can be used can also be curved or otherwise irregular rather than flat.

Both methods fit best for large production runs by having a singular machine for each color, then after running all of your paper (or equivalent) through the machines, you come out with a clean, crisp image. Now take that knowledge forward with a conversation on your next order with AttaPack!
